Thursday Match Secretary’s season review

The two teams to beat this season in the Thursday League were Canton Libs A and The New Park who dominated the league. Senghenydd, SWS and last years champions Taffs Well all had hard fought seasons and were the best of the rest. New boys Savoy impressed in the second half of the season to finish in the top 8. Gower finished in a creditable 7th after a difficult start, but with Spencer Symmons and Graeme Prance added to their team, proved to be a much more rounded team. Roath Labour were the early season surprise package mixing it with the likes of SWS, Senghenydd etc, however a bad run in the last part of the season meant that they only just completed the top 8.

Trec B were the most improved team of the season picking up several wins and will be a team to be watched next season. Rumney BL started the season badly but then results slowly improved to finish in the pack. Cardiff Uni although only winning 11 games were very competitive, losing 14 matches 3-2 due to some poor captaincy from Madmonk – playing a defensive order to guarantee a 3-2 loss. Canton Libs Z had a difficult season after moving over from the Wellington and had an up and down season, hopefully they will improve for next year.

Newcommers Cathays Cons will be proud of their performance in that they didnt finish bottom, a side that consistently improved over the season and will hope to continue this into the next season. Canton Libs B consistently struggled this season and need a couple more players to attempt to get into the mid table positions for next season. Trec C had a promising debut in the league and will hope to build on the success that Trec B had in their second season in the league. Finally No Balls had an up and down season, the highlights were getting the double over SWS and the bad side was being deducted 12pts for 2 no shows!

Ed Topham from South Wales Snooker won the highest break prize with his 100 break – the first ton outside the Tuesday League in many years.
