Jason Hewett is the 2019-20 Cardiff Open Singles champion after a 4-0 victory against Taff’s Well’s Rhys Carpenter.
The Mackintosh potting machine established a lead in the first which he kept through the frame, and a few missed pots from Carpenter saw the frame over before the colours.
He was more fluent in the next with six reds and six blacks but he snookered himself on the next red meaning he had to be content with a 48 break to build a substantial lead. Carpenter came back with a solid contribution but it wasn’t enough to level things up as Hewett made it 2-0.
The third frame proved to be decisive after early contributions from both set up a high-quality frame which went to the colours. A mistake from Hewett left the brown over the green pocket, which Carpenter sank with an excellent deep screw back for the blue. However, the white travelled a couple of inches too far meaning he needed to take the cue ball in and out of baulk back up for the pink near the top cushion. With a guaranteed snooker behind the black an option, Carpenter went for it but it jawed allowing Hewett to seal the frame and lead 3-0.
That moment felt decisive and so it proved as Hewett built an early lead and maintained it through to the colours to win the fourth frame and clinch his fifth Cardiff Open title to add to his wins in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
