The race for the Premier League title continues to be very tight as all three sides at the top won convincingly this week. Leaders Fairwater Cons beat in-form Mackintosh Snooker 5-0 after wins for Twm Sion Jones against Craig Bolton and Terry Garland versus Carlos Schiazza gave them the early advantage, before Steffan Davies made sure of the win with victory over Mike Nessbert. Captain Steve Flanagan then made it 4-0 by defeating Nathan Dunne and Ben Griffiths rounded things off with a win over Billy Connors.
Mackintosh Sports matched that result though in emphatic fashion against Savoy to keep up the pressure on the leaders, with Jason Hewett winning the opener against Colin Lane thanks to a 45 break. The frame of the week saw Mark Bennett build a lead over Alan Hurley, but an excellent 31 clearance from the Mack maestro saw him win the frame on the black. Brian Rees then comfortably defeated Jeff Lane and Khurram Khan won against Jason Summerhayes to make it 4-0, before Ronnie Allen made sure of the whitewash but Geoff Sheppard almost won it after a 33 break which ended when he missed the blue, leaving the Mack captain to pot it followed by the pink to seal an excellent 5-0 victory.
Canton Libs are making sure that it is not a two-horse race though after they won 4-1 at home to RBL Warriors and find themselves seven points behind champions Fairwater albeit with a game in hand. Ed Topham won the first against Ken Linsey, before Luke Haines made it 2-0 by beating Chris Johnson. However, Jason Veal pulled one back after defeating Rory Wigmore but Declan O’Callaghan made sure of the win against Nick Davis, before James Wigmore won the last against Simon Takata.
Cathays Cons remain in fourth after a 4-1 win away to Rumney British Legion with Mike Rathkey beating Albert Columbo in the opening frame. Justin Behnan then levelled things up with a win against Dave Earls, before a 36 break from Johnny Davies was enough to beat Tony Parkin to make it 2-1. Dave Standage kept up his excellent individual form to beat Alex Ellis and Martyn Evans won the final frame against Ben Harding to make it a good night’s work for Darren Gill’s side. They are only ahead of Trecenydd Snooker on games won though after the Caerphilly side registered an impressive 5-0 win away to Cuesaders Z with wins for Dan Bridle, David Birkenshaw, Dai Rideout, Mike Pardoe and Chris Garwood.
