Canton Libs are up to third in the Premier League after a 5-0 win over RBL Warriors saw them make it back-to-back wins to once again look like being the biggest threat to early Fairwater dominance. Ed Topham comfortably won the first frame against Dave Richards, before Rory Wigmore won on the colours against Chris Johnson to make it 2-0. James Facey’s win over Nick Davis was followed by victory for Declan O’Callaghan against Simon Takata and Luke Haines completed the whitewash with a win over Jason Veal.
However, they are going to need to catch the champions whose unrelenting form continues with a 5-0 win against Mackintosh Snooker, although the result doesn’t reflect a match that had several frames that went close. Twm Sion Jones kept up his unbeaten start to the season thanks to a 35 break against Jerry Connors, before Terry Garland won on the pink against Carlo Schiazza to double their lead. Steffan Davies was impressive in the next with a 39 giving him the early lead, before missing the yellow on 24 when the clearance looked likely. A solid performance from Shaun O’Connell kept out Billy Connors to make it 4-0, but Nathan Dunne looked favourite to win a consolation frame against Ben Griffiths going into the colours, but an unfortunate kick cost him the frame and allowed last season’s Player of the Year to clear blue to black to win it.
Fairwater Cons Mack may have moved venue, but they showed they are ready for another title challenge this season with an impressive 5-0 win at Beech Tree Hotel. The opening duo of Jason Hewett and Alan Hurley put them 2-0 up after wins against Dan Bridle and Dai Rideout respectively, before Brian Rees clinched a close win over Tony Williams in the third frame. Khurram Khan then made it 4-0 with victory over Mike Pardoe whilst captain Ronnie Allen completed the clean sweep with a win against Craig Fletcher to maintain the gap to Fairwater at the top.
Cathays Cons won a tight match 3-2 against Savoy but had to come from behind after Mark Bennett’s superb start to the season continued as he dispatched Ryan Bowgen thanks to a 46 break. There then followed three black ball frames with Cathays winning two of them to take the match to a decider. Mike Rathkey beat Jeff Lane and Martyn Evans defeated Lee Greening, but Colin Lane kept things alive with a win in the captains’ match against Darren Gill. However, after a series of close frames Jason Summerhayes won against his old side with victory over Dave Hurn to give Cathays their second win of the season.
Rumney British Legion’s good start to the season moved them up to fourth in the table with a 3-2 win over Roath Cons. Wins for Graeme Prance against Presley Cornock and Andy Magill over Kerry Whiting saw them go 2-0 ahead, but Phil Storer’s defeat of Frank Deriu and Andy Champion’s victory over Tony Parkin drew them level. A close deciding frame could have gone either way, but Paul Chichester won it on the colours against Lee Cornock to leave Roath waiting for their first win of the season.
