Hewett Creates History with Unprecedented Clean Sweep

Jason Hewett has completed a historic clean sweep of all individual and team competitions after he defeated team-mate Khurram Khan 4-2 this week to win the Cardiff Open Singles at Fairwater Cons.

The match was a repeat of the Handicap Singles final, and featured quality safety exchanges throughout, coupled with high-scoring and fine potting from both players. The opening frame went to Khan after a well-placed snooker led to a 40 break to give him the perfect start.

The second frame was another tight affair until Khan pulled away with a well-worked 30 break. Hewett had a chance to win the frame on the colours and was unlucky to go in-off the brown whilst trying to play around the table to get on the blue. Khan made no mistake and calmly potted brown, blue, pink and black to double his lead and go 2-0 ahead.

Hewett went into this match knowing a win would mean an unprecedented clean sweep, winning both singles titles, both pairs and the league and cup for Fairwater Mack, and in the next frame we started to see the confident and fluent potting we’ve seen all season and he took the frame comfortably to get on the scoreboard.

The fourth frame turned out to the pivotal frame of the match as Hewett started confidently with a 36 break which was countered by a 30 break from Khan to put him ahead on the last red. A safety battle on the colours was followed by a fluked pink for Khan, and a chance at a mid-distance black for the frame. However, he missed and Hewett sealed the frame with a doubled black to level at 2-2, and he now had the momentum and built a healthy lead in the next, eventually leading by 34 points on the final red, which he potted to go ahead for the first time.

The next was another very tight frame until Hewett registered a 35 break to put him ahead on the last red. However, Khan potted it and had the chance to take the match to a decider but a tricky pink didn’t quite drop, leaving a simple pot for Hewett to win the match 4-2 and achieve the greatest individual feat in CDSA history.
