Fairwater Cons got the Malcolm Keenor Trophy off to an exciting start after they beat neighbours and defending champions Fairwater Cons Mack 3-2 in the opening match of Group B. With the top sides qualifying for the semi-finals it was an important match and Steffan Davies got the home side off to a great start with victory over Alan Hurley after a pressure clearance to the pink. New signing Rob McKenna then doubled their lead after he beat Brian Rees with some great potting, but Jason Hewett pulled one back after getting a snooker ahead on the last red and Khurram Khan levelled the match after winning against Ben Griffiths. The deciding frame was a tense one as a snooker from Garland with two reds left looked like being decisive, but Boyle stayed in it and had a chance to clear but missed the pink and Garland sealed the frame and the match for his side.

In the other match in Group B, Taff’s Well lead the way after winning 5-0 away to Roath Cons with Scott Miners winning the opening frame against Rob Reid on the colours. Lee Cornock’s frame against Glyn Jones was close throughout and he looked to have made it 1-1 as he potted blue and pink to leave himself the black close to the baulk cushion, but it wobbled and Jones sank it to put his side 2-0 up. Alan Wright made a good start in his frame against Jimmy Llewellyn, but a clearance on the colours was enough to seal the match and make it 3-0. Tom Cross’s first frame of the season saw him win a close one against Andrew Champion, before Rob Hayes finished off the whitewash with victory over Clive Marsh.

In Group A, Mackintosh Snooker had a good start to their campaign with a 4-1 win at home to Beech Tree Hotel, whilst Rumney British Legion won 3-2 at The Cons.
