Taff’s Well produced the result of the week as they beat defending Premier League champions Caerphilly A 4-1 to move into third-place in the table at this early stage. After only four matches, every side has at least one defeat in one of the closest starts to a season in recent memory, highlighting the competitiveness of the CDSA this year.
Rhys Carpenter’s fluent display comfortably won the opening frame against Dave Hartnell, before Glyn Jones and Owen Fear contested a close second frame with both players having chances to win it on the colours, but Jones edged it after sinking a very good long black. Caerphilly captain Ben Griffiths started the next frame strongly to build a lead against Justin Jones, but a 23 break reduced the gap and took the frame to the colours, with a tremendous pink down the cushion from Jones sealing the win for Taff’s Well. Kevin Brown’s unbeaten start to the season continued in the next frame as a solid display of potting and tactical play saw him defeat Nural Khan on the colours, before an entertaining, high-scoring frame saw Jimmy Llewellyn go in-off the green on a break of 25 to leave Khurram Khan the chance to clear to win it on the black and secure a consolation frame for Caerphilly.
Market Street A remain at the top of the table as they got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win at home against Mackintosh Snooker, but they had to come from behind as a 24 break from Eassa Din took his frame against Adrian Webber to the colours before winning it on the black. Mike Sherrin levelled the match after winning a close second frame versus Carlos Schiazza, before in-form Craig Hellinger maintained his 100% league record with a comfortable win over Mike Nessbert. The individual performance of the week saw a 50 break from Brian Rees against Alan Cook make it 2-2, but Colin Harding potted the blue and pink to beat Nathan Dunne in the decider.
Fairwater Cons are second after a solid 4-1 win over Canton Libs, with unbeaten Twm Sion Jones making an excellent 46 break to win the opener against Declan O’Callaghan. The next frame was a very competitive one as a 25 break from Jez Charles saw him take Jason Hewett to the colours, but the multiple Cardiff Open champion cleared to the pink to make it 2-0. Another quality frame saw a 29 break from Canton captain James Wigmore give him an early lead over Dan Bridle, who responded with a 34 break before potting well to win on the colours. A scrappy fourth frame saw Ian Denton beat Terry Garland on the black, before good safety and potting from both Steve Flanaghan and Tony Chick took the final frame to the colours, with the Fairwater captain sealing the win on the blue.
Macky Cuesaders are fifth after they beat Cathays Sports 4-1 with Rob Baker comfortably winning the first frame against Andrew Champion, before Jacob Boyle doubled their lead after beating Joe Browse. Logan Rawlings sealed the win after his defeat of Alan Wright on the colours and a close win for Steve McDonnell over Chris Harding made it 4-0, before Cathays captain Lee Cornock defeated Ronnie Allen to clinch a consolation frame.
Canton Warriors move above Macky Misfits in mid-table after they won 4-1 with wins for Jason Veal over William Eades and Nick Davies against John Moore giving them a 2-0 lead. Dave Richards defeated Nadeem Tariq in the next frame, before Graeme Prance won again to remain unbeaten as he beat Simon Takata to pull one back, but Chris Johnson beat Bill Bainton on the colours to seal a good night for the Warriors.
County followed up last week’s win in the cup with a 4-1 victory away at Rumney British Legion, but it was Rumney who won a high-scoring opening frame as Albert Columbo beat Darren Gill, before David Standage levelled with a close win over Ethan Chichester. Satinder Singh gave County the lead after his victory over Carl Galloway, before Gary Prosser comfortably beat Ben Harding and Suhayb Din completed the win after beating Glyn Hayes.
