Gap remains 5 points as Savoy, County and Fairwater all win close matches

It’s largely as you were in the Premier League, with wins for the two teams at the top by three frames to two, ensuring that the gap is still five points. Those teams Savoy and County will meet in the Cup, as long as Savoy get past Rumney, because County’s game with Trecenydd doubled as a Cup Last 16 game, and Dr Robert Hayes came off the bench like the supersub he is to clinch County’s win.

But the quality this week was elsewhere. Mark Bennett still heads the rankings table after a run of 83 gave him a tenth win, while Jason Hewett remained unbeaten, but could not lift Mack to a win, handing Park Cons a second win of the season, and lifting them back above South Wales Snooker. That’s ten without defeat for both players, while one other player – Kevin Brown – has now gone unbeaten for nine games, which constitutes half a (very lucky) season. All in all a good week for the top four as there were quite a few of the top ten who dropped frames.

Fairwater’s game with Canton may have produced the highest sustained standard, because there were wins for Ralph over Twm, Travis over Richard, Kishan over Dennis, Steve F over Shaun, and Frank Thomas over Terry, ending 3-2 to Fairwater, but the breaks were raining down. Ralph had 57, Travis 49 and 44, and Kishan a paltry 44.

The table condenses even more in terms of the fight to rise above mid-table mediocrity. Mackintosh Thursday remain sure they can catch the A side, and win the right to that name next season, while Fairwater have nosed ahead of Penarth Rd and Trec in the hunt for third place, although they might well feel they have the ammunition in their squad to still take top spot before the season is out.
