Cuesaders pulled off one of the results of the season this week with a 4-1 win over league leaders Mackintosh to hand the initiative back to their title rivals after a dramatic night in the CDSA. After Jason Hewitt’s opening win in the first frame, it looked as though a strong Mack line-up would back up last week’s astonishing whitewash of Fairwater Cons, but Mike Kinman’s side had other ideas.

Wins for Graham Jenkins and Leon Giles against Alan Hurley and Khurram Khan respectively turned the match on its head, before captain Kinman beat Clive Marsh to make sure of the win, with Graeme Prance sealing an impressive night for a talented side, who will be wondering how this was only their fifth league win of the year.

The other two title contenders Fairwater Cons and Savoy had tough matches on their hands at Taff’s Well and Trecenydd Snooker, but both managed to seal crucial 3-2 victories after some close frames and tense moments. Taff’s Well were missing captain Tom Cross and star player Brian Rees, but were able to call in quality replacements and one of those Ian Purnell won the opener against Twm Jones. The next frame was a close affair, but Luke Pitman won it on the colours against Rob Hayes to level things up at 1-1. The pivotal frame of the match saw Nick Jones taking on Steffan Davies, and a good start for the Taff’s Well player looked like being enough, before Davies hit back to win it on the blue. The last two frames were quick affairs with Kevin Brown comfortably defeating Shaun O’Connell to take the match to a decider, but fluent potting from Ben Griffiths, including a 40 break, was enough to win the last frame and give Fairwater a vital win that takes them top of the Premier League.

The other match was equally close as Sam Thomas once again overcame Dylan Emery to give Savoy the perfect start, before Mark Bennett followed up to make it 2-0. However, a 47 break from Chris Garwood was enough to defeat Kyle Patterson and Tony Williams made sure the match went to a decider by winning the fourth frame. Knowing the bonus point for a win was absolutely crucial to their chances of defending their league title, Geoff Sheppard sealed the 3-2 win with victory over Michelle Emery, to move above Mackintosh into second place, just two points behind Fairwater.

Canton Libs B took advantage of Taff’s Well’s defeat to close the gap at the bottom of the Premier League to just a single point after beating local rivals Canton Libs Z 3-2, whilst Cathays Cons gave themselves some breathing space after they defeated Rumney British Legion by the same scoreline. Canton Z’s defeat meant that Senghenydd had the chance to close the gap in the race for the Division One title, and they made the most of their opportunity with a comprehensive 5-0 win at Llandaff Warriors to move to within just two points of Canton.
