Fairwater Cons won a hard-fought victory away to Savoy this week to move back to the top of the Premier League as Mackintosh Sports’ match against Canton Libs had to be postponed. The reigning champions find themselves in a tight battle for the title this year and a visit to the 2018 & 2019 winners Savoy presented a challenge to Steve Flanagan’s side that they responded to well with a 3-2 win. They had to come from behind though as Mark Bennett retained his 100% record with a comfortable win over Shaun O’Connell registering a 34 break in the process to win the opening frame.

Savoy would have been confident of doubling their lead as two-time Cardiff Open champion Ryan Rowlands was up next, but a 38 break from Twm Sion Jones contributed to him winning the frame and levelling the match at 1-1. Some good long potting from Terry Garland then put Fairwater in front after beating Dave Hurn, before Ben Griffiths lost for the first time this season after an excellent performance and 37 break from Jason Summerhayes, and was enough to take the match to a brilliant decider and arguably the frame of the season so far. Geoff Sheppard took an early lead but Steffan Davies hit back with an excellent 50 break, before Sheppard responded with his second 20 break of the frame to take it to the colours and after potting the green he looked favourite, but Davies responded with a superb long brown to seal the frame and match for his side.

Trecenydd Snooker registered the only whitewash of the week with a 5-0 win over RBL Warriors, which also saw the individual highlight of the week with a 62 break from Dan Bridle to win the opening frame against Simon Takata. Mike Pardoe then made it 2-0 with a win against Chris Johnson, before Dai Birkenshaw sealed the win with a black ball victory over Jason Veal. Tony Williams beat Nick Davis to make it 4-0 before another black ball frame win for Chris Garwood over Mike Watts gave them all six points.

Cathays Cons moved into fourth place in the table with a 4-1 win over Cuesaders Z and with a game in hand on the leaders will be hoping to make sure the title run-in is not just a three-way race. Things didn’t start well for them though as in-form Ryan Bowgen beat Dan Jones to win the opener. Johnny Davies levelled the match with a win over Mike Kinman, before Dave Standage maintained his good form by beating Dave Reynolds to make it 2-1. Dave Earls then won the next against Paul Chichester and Darren Gill finished things off with victory over Graeme Prance.

Taff’s Well ended their poor run of form with a 4-1 win away to Rumney British Legion to move into fifth place and with the league splitting into two divisions at the halfway point of 10 matches, they gave themselves a good chance of remaining in the Premier League. However, they had to work hard for their win after Albert Columbo comfortably beat Nick Jones to take an early lead, before James Llewellyn and Glyn Jones both won pink-ball frames against Glyn Hayes and Andy Magill respectively. Kevin Brown then quickly made it 3-1 with victory over Frank Deriu and Rob Hayes completed the win in the final frame against Alex Ellis.
