Mackintosh Sports made a big statement in the title race this week with a 4-1 win away to champions Fairwater Cons to move above them into first place in the table, and with a game in hand on their fellow title rivals. The match featured some of the CDSA’s biggest names and it was one of those and reigning Cardiff Open champion Jason Hewett who got his side off to the perfect start by beating Twm Sion Jones on the blue.

The next frame was pivotal in determining the outcome as two players well-known to the Welsh snooker scene faced off against each other. The Mack’s Alan Hurley made a strong start with a 31 to open but Fairwater’s Allan Morgan hit back with breaks of 27 and 31 to take control heading into the colours. The match was close as they got to the blue but Morgan missed a tough cut and Hurley cleared with blue, followed by a double on the pink to leave a straightforward black to make it 2-0.

Clive Marsh then sealed the victory with a comfortable win over Steffan Davies, before a 37 break from Ben Griffiths ensured Fairwater hit back to make it 3-1 leaving a crucial final frame, which Mackintosh’s captain Ronnie Allen won against Shaun O’Connell to take his side to the summit of the Premier League for the first time this season.

Canton Libs remain the only other unbeaten side in the league alongside Mackintosh Sports after their defeated Rumney British Legion 3-2, but will feel disappointed as they couldn’t take advantage of a 3-0 lead thanks to a strong fightback from Frank Deriu’s side. Declan O’Callaghan won the first against Ben Harding before Luke Haines doubled their lead against Anthony Parking. James Facey’s win over Justin Behnan made sure they would keep their 100% record, but wins for Alex Ellis and Frank Deriu over Rory Wigmore and Tony Chick respectively made sure Rumney left with a deserved couple of points from the match.

Mackintosh Snooker registered their second win of the season with an impressive 3-2 win over Cathays Cons which moves them into joint 7th in the league. Jerry Connors got them off to a good start with a win over Darren Gill, before Carlos Schiazza comfortably beat Mike Rathkey to put them two up. Johnny Davies pulled one back for Cathays with a win over Mackintosh’s captain Michael Nessbit, but the win was sealed by Nathan Dunne’s defeat of Martyn Evans, whilst Dave Standage won the last for Cathays against Trevor Connors.

Cuesaders Z inflicted a 3-2 defeat on Savoy to consolidate their place near the top of the table, but the Barry side started well with victory for Jason Summerhayes over in-form Dave Reynolds, before Ryan Bowgen levelled things up with a win over Geoff Sheppard. Savoy regained the lead with Ryan Rowlands beating Bill Bainton, but Cuesaders restored parity for the second time with a win for Graeme Prance against Dave Hurn thanks to a 42 break. Paul Chichester then joined his captain on the breaks board with a 39 to help him beat Jeff Lane and take the win.

Trecenydd Snooker moved up the table thanks to a 4-1 at Taff’s Well, but they had to come back from behind after Nick Jones’s impressive performance in the opener against Carl Dimond, including a 50 break which was the highest of the week in the CDSA. However, Dan Bridle levelled the match with a win over Glyn Jones and that quickly became 2-1 after David Rideout beat Tom Cross. The last frames were close affairs but went the way of Trecenydd with Chris Garwood beating Kevin Brown following a fluked snooker behind the pink after missing the blue, before Mike Pardoe won a close encounter against Rob Hayes to seal a great night’s work for the Caerphilly side.
